The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess

In Spring of 2010, RCM began working with author Robin Thompson on an illustrated volume commemorating the 75th Anniversary of Porgy and Bess, the groundbreaking “folk opera” by legendary composer George Gershwin with his lyricist brother, Ira, and the original novelist and playwright DuBose Heyward. Under the auspices of the George Gershwin estate and with help from The Ira and Leonore Gershwin Trusts, Rusty Cutchin accompanied Thompson to Washington DC to research the book and examine the Gershwin archives at the Library of Congress and interview principals from the Washington Opera’s production of Porgy and Bess at the Kennedy Center. RCM’s team of independent editors and designers produced the resulting anniversary volume, and the book was published by Hal Leonard in October, 2010. Samples from the book appear here.
